The Green Deal to support business owners

One of the hottest topics at the moment is the Green Deal. It has caused both confusion and enthusiasm. The most enthusiastic ones seem to be business owners who really want to make the best out of this offer. According to Energy and Environmental Management, 12% of business owners plan to use the Green Deal.
Here are some of the ideas connected to how the Green Deal can be used by business owners:
  • 18% said LED lighting;
  • 10% said window glazing;
  • 9% said insulation or draught proofing;
  • 1% said biomass boilers;
  • 1% said automated systems and controls.

The initiative came once it had been discovered that Britain’s buildings are responsible for around 40% of the country’s greenhouse-gas emissions. It’s not just homes that are poorly insulated or lacking double gazing, but commercial areas as well. According to the energy department keeping them warm produces 38 per cent of the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions.
In the past businesses and public sector bodies have been able to apply for access to similar pay-as-you-save financing schemes, such as the Salix scheme for public sector properties and the £550m corporate energy efficiency fund operated by the Carbon Trust and Siemens.
Green Deal is expected to significantly extend the reach of the pay-as-you-save model.
"We expect the companies currently providing energy efficiency financing to look at the Green Deal," said one government source. "The existing schemes are great, but the key difference between Salix and the Carbon Trust models compared with the Green Deal is that they are limited by the amount of money that has been put into them. In the grand scheme of things they are relatively small, whereas there isn't a cap on the amount of Green Deal finance that is potentially available." (Business Green).
At the same time, the number of Green Deal providers that offer services to both businesses and domestic customers is expected to increase.
As in the case of individual home owner,  everything will start with an assessment to outline which technologies will be the most effective. Then the business owner can apply for funding to have the installation made. It is estimated that the funding will be of a high value than is offered to home owners. However, these details still need to be worked out.
